What is acne?

The acne problem, also known as pimple, is a problem occurring due to the clogging of the pores. Blackhead, whitehead or inflammatory pimples may manifest in the form of cysts. It occurs most commonly on the face. However, they may appear on the neck, chest, shoulders and sometimes on the upper part of the arm. As acne problem can occur in adolescence, it may also appear in adulthood. It may even manifest more severely in adulthood. If the acne problem is not treated and taken under control, it has the risk of leaving a permanent scar.

How does an acne occur?

The hormones of both men and women increase with the transition to adolescence. The increased levels of hormones lead to the growth and more lipid release by the sebaceous glands in the skin. These sebaceous glands are found in the face, neck, chest, dorsal region more intensely. Acne can sometimes be associated with hormonal irregularities. The sebaceous glands are connected to the main channel of the hair follicle with a channel. Through these channels, they release the lipid called sebum specific to the skin, and in case of clogging of these channels functioning in access to the skin surface, the sebum accumulated beneath the skin forms the first simple acne, called white comedone. When white comedones are opened to the skin surface, the sebum is oxidized after its contact with air and cause black comedones or blackheads. A bacteria called Pitriosporum acnes within the plug uses sebum as the nutritional source. In case of the overgrowth of this bacterium, the acne type in the form of inflammatory pimples (papules, pustules or cysts) which leaves scars clinically develops. If blackheads and whiteheads are treated, they usually disappear without leaving a scar. However, when the inflamed acne resolves, it definitely heals by leaving more or fewer scars on the skin.
